Callygraphic and artistic schools and scriptorial centers in the Bulgarian lands

Specimens from the Slavonic manuscript collection of Plovdiv Public Library

ABOUT BULGARIAN
CALLYGRAPHIC SCHOOLS

The diversity of the Slavonic manuscripts from the collection of the ‘Ivan Vazov’ Public Library – Plovdiv is indicative of the process of migration of literary monuments during the Middle Ages and more recently. The most significant writing centers in XV–XVIII centuries – those in Etropole, Karlovo, Adjar, Kouklen, Kotel – are presented here with their own handwritten specimens.

The Bulgarian literary monuments dating from the Ottoman rule are, as it is known, too diverse in linguistic, spelling and artistic way – as a result of the lack of large state and cultural centers to play a guiding and unifying role. For this reason, the various copywriting centers of that time fall and develop under the influence of numerous and often contradictory influences.
